Division of Dermatology,
Department of Medicine / Research Center Clinic

King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital

Academically excellent through freedom of thought and professional ethics

The Division of  Dermatology was established in 1947, it was a part of the Department of internal medicine. In the past, skin disease wasn’t treated as a single subject because there was no specialized dermatology professor. There were two senior professors which were Professor Doctor Luang Prakitvejsak and Professor Doctor Apai Chamunee who examined patients with skin disease.

In 1952, Professor Doctor Amnuay Viphagool became the Professor in the Department of internal medicine; he examined and treated skin disease patients in the out-patient ward, Jakkapong Building with Professor Doctor Luang Prakitvejsak and Professor Doctor Apai Chamunee.

In 1956, Professor Doctor Sunit Jermsiriwat who studied dermatology in the USA, transferred from Bangrak hospital and became the Professor at the Department of internal medicine. He began to examine skin disease and also started to teach dermatology to resident doctors and medical students of the Department of internal medicine. So, the Department of internal medicine opened a dermatology and venereal disease clinic for the first time; it was situated in the room next to the stairs in the out-patient ward, Gynecology.

In 1967, there was an examination room for skin disease at the out-patient ward, Jakkapong Building.

In 1973, it was established as the division of dermatology in the Department of internal medicine, it was located at the Department of internal medicine Building, Ground floor. It consisted of 2 on-call rooms, 1 dermatology operating room for biopsies and a pathology laboratory for resident doctors to study derma-pathology. Professor Doctor Kajorn Pranit from Microbiology was there to support the teaching. All 3 professors collaborated, developed and improved the education system; as a result there were increased numbers of professors, scientists and nurses.

In 1982, it was moved to the department of internal medicine building, 2nd floor and the name was changed from the Dermatology Division to the Department of Dermatology. There were lots of professors to support the education and improve to western countries’ standards.

In 1989, All examination rooms were moved to Bhor Por Ror Building, 2nd floor, back then its construction had just been completed. There were 15 examination rooms, 1 operating room, 3 laser rooms, 1 radiology room, 1 medical procedure room and 1 library.

In 1992, the skin laser center was established and provided a service at the out-patient ward, to Bhor Por Ror Building, 2nd floor, The King Chulalongkorm Hospital, Weekdays, 09.00 – 12.00 hrs.

In 2000, There was a significant increase in numbers of patients, so that the skin laser center extended its operating hours

From 1999 – 2009, the Department of Dermatology  moved to Jiraprawatsanti and Sighaseinee, 2nd floor. There was 1 operating room, 1 examination room, 1  lecture room , 1 resident doctor on-call room, 5 professor rooms, 5 full time professors and 4 staff.

In 2003, from June 1st,  the Department of Dermatology opened 2 specialized disease clinics at Bhor Por Ror Building, 2nd floor:  a work-related and environment skin diseases clinic opened Weekdays 13.00 – 16.00 hrs. and a psoriasis clinic every Monday, 13.00 – 16.00 hrs. with associate professor Doctor Porntip as the consultant.

Graduated Degree

We opened one residency doctor program for dermatology. The Residency Doctor Program for dermatology from 1974 to 2004 was developed from the Residency Doctor Program for dermatology under supervision of the Medical Council of Thailand to Graduated Diploma of Dermatology under supervision of Chulalongkorn University.

Dermatology is a field which is the academic foundation of internal medicine. Skin and tissue are organs which cover the entire body’s surface. This makes possible detection of skin diseases either direct skin diseases and skin disorders which are the symptoms of internal diseases of other systems. Moreover, dermatology covers medical technology in a broad spectrum. Skin disease is abundant, complex, severe and emergent. Dermatology progress, academically, is moving at a fast pace, it is a challenge to the doctor’s knowledge and abilities to deliver diagnosis, treatment and prognosis.

Aside from knowledge and skill in dermatology, the dermatologist needs to be continuously learning with good intentions, ready to be a life-long learner, produce more research, be professional, be communicative and interactive and collaborate their work. Multidisciplinary operations, understanding public health systems, understanding the importance of healthy skin for community and society, good management, quality and safety, be responsible, be moral, have good attitude towards patients, appropriate behavior among colleagues and within our own profession and other fields, be kind and caring based on patients. The process of molding medical workers is based on a Public health system for society to benefit our country.
