In the past, King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital was under the Ministry of Defense, operated by the occupational midwife with a diploma from Her Majesty Queen Saowapa Phongsri’s Midwifery School, Siriraj Hospital, established for providing female and male nurses in charge of patients.  The male nurses were the sergeants and the generals of the Central Army Nurses. Later, a nursing school was established with the first service in Siam on June 16, 1914, managed by the education department of the Central Army Nursing Division.

In 1917, the King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital was no longer managed by the Ministry of Defense for a period of one year, the Department of Education, Royal Thai Army Nursing Division was discharged. After that, the Nursing school was transferred to the medical department of King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital.

Until the year 1927, the Siam Red Cross has reunited the entire nursing department and the education department, led by Ms. Mandalarop Kamalas as the head nurse. Her Highness controlled and was responsible for both nursing service and nursing school until the year 1969, the Thai Red Cross Society deemed it appropriate to improve education and nursing services due to wider job scopes. Therefore the education and nursing service work were separated with the head nurse responsible for nursing services since then. In the year 1997, the nursing department has changed to “Nursing Department” until now.

Awards and Recognition

1. The Nursing Department supports quality development. That is training activities such as the academic presentation forum and quality development activities in every department for at least 1 project a year under the PI: Performance Improvement. Many of those projects were developed into nursing innovations and were promoted overseas, such as the teaching programs to increase the skill, ability and success rate of urinary catheterization of patients with persistent or inability to urinate (Bhor Por Ror Building, Floor 6). The project helped effectively reduce the rate of patients with urinary infections. And it won the first prize of the quality exhibition system from Thammasat Hospital and the quality exhibition contest “Inner Power, Together We Can” in the 18th Ha National Forum and presented at the International forum – Quality and Safety in Healthcare in London.
   
   
2. The Nursing Professional Development Center  was established in 2016 and it was the prototype of a new model of nurse training under the Nurse Residency Training Program for career development in the clinical nurse educator field.
   
   
3. The disease specific certification of the occupational nurses working closely with a multidisciplinary team for effective and recognizable medical care such as acute myeloid leukemia, stroke and chronic kidney disease.
   
   
4. During the COVID-19 pandemic situation, the ICN: Infection Control Nurse team has effectively helped train and monitor the fitting of anti-infectious equipment to all King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital personnel. The feedback was highly positive  for it perfectly helped build confidence in the treatment of COVID-19 patients.

Services

The Nursing Department aims to serve patients effectively with the service mind of the Thai Red Cross at all dimensions of medical treatment to either outpatient departments, emergency rooms, in wards, critical wards, operating theatres, delivery rooms and many more specialized units including continuous care in patients after their discharge from the hospital. The mission is managed by the continuous care centre. In addition, it also provides quality development, research and academic services including training programs and seminars for internal personnel. The course will be updated to comply with situations so that the personnel are equipped with the advanced training to continuously improve the quality of nursing services.

KCMH Nursing Department also offers training courses for external institutions with the purpose of sharing knowledge, both academically and practically, to those public joiners. For example, 

• Specialized nursing in the field of renal replacement therapy nursing
• Comprehensive Clinical Practice in Neurology and Neurosurgery 
• Nursing Course for the Elderly in Hospital
• Workshop on Wound and Stoma Care
• Short-term training courses to Nursing care in patients with chemotherapy drugs
