Department of Ophthalmology, King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital was established after the conversion from the Division of Ophthalmology to the Department of Ophthalmology in 1968. Since, the department has not idled on moving forward towards the most updated operational venue, in terms of infrastructures, service and administration. Currently, we have 8 well-equipped operating theaters with state-of-the-art instruments as well as well-trained personnel. The in-patient service has been revamped and relocated to 15th Floor, Bhumisirimangalanusorn Building for more convenience to the patients whom will be attended by the attentive nursing crew. The out-patient service is at present based on 13th and 14th Floor of The Sor Thor Building with comprehensive investigational resources to serve the increasing number of complicated eye patients. In addition, the department office has a new house, been moved from the classic Chumbhotbongs Paribatra building to modernized Ratanavidhayabhat building on the 16th Floor.

One of the prides we attain are getting consecutively rewarded and publicly honored by the Thai Red Cross Society as the assisting network on affording the eyes donation program, convinced by the regular achievement in “the highest number of corneal transplantation surgery of the year” since 2010.

Our Services / Center

Our department comprises professionally experienced, skillful and decent staff who are considered creme de la creme of the region and the country. The most reliable equipment with the most updated technologies is ready to serve every patient for any advanced treatment. The department or Chulalongkorn eye center has 9 units, an excimer refractive surgery center (Chula Refractive Surgery Center) and an excellence center for cornea and limbal stem cell transplantation (CEC). We also liaise with neurology specialists, eg. neurologists or neuro-radiologists, developing a neurology-science unit to ameliorate the treatment options for nervous system related diseases. Besides, we also established glaucoma as well as retina research units (RU) of which advocated by Chulalongkorn University. These two RUs are hard working on many developments focusing on ophthalmic diagnostics and treatment tools.

Our department is verified as a top-notch educating, training and servicing institute. We are one of the best in the country of ophthalmology residency training schools, under the standardized guidelines of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists of Thailand (RCOPT) and World Federation of Medical Education (WFME) in which entrusted for qualified graduates to serve the society. Moreover, we are well recognized venue for fellowship training in 6 sub-specialties, providing in depth acknowledgeable subspecialists to healthcare system as to solving more complicated eye problems. 

Not only being the nation’s leader in ophthalmology, we are determined to becoming the region’s training top list.
We are making headway to organize an “Advanced cataract surgical training center” along with the “International workshop projects” to be regarded as “The International Ophthalmology Training Center”. The center that engage high technologies in ophthalmic diagnosis and treatment, the surgical aspect in particular.

Notwithstanding the continual training and education development, we deeply care for social service. In conjunction with Thai Red Cross, the service units were launched in need to serve the people in both local and international communities, as the service camp in Bhutan for two consecutive years.
