Responsible for rapid and good standard laboratory tests for patients at the hospital.

The Department of Laboratory Medicine is a division within the Chulalongkorn Hospital, which was established simultaneously with the hospital in 1914 and was initially called The Pathology Division and was responsible for laboratory tests for patients at the hospital. In 1947, The Faculty of Medicine was established. This transferred anything related to anatomical pathology to the Department of Laboratory. As for laboratory testing that involved clinical chemistry, this was assigned to the physiology department. Anything related to hematology examinations would be with the pathology department including urine and feces examinations in 1958. 

The University Chulalongkorn’s Faculty of Medical Technology was created within the hospital to provide education for medical technology students and a laboratory for patients at the hospital. Thus the Department of laboratory and physiology decided to merge in 1967 with the Faculty of Medicine. Chulalongkorn Hospital moved to The University Chulalongkorn in 1971.

The Faculty of Medical Technology joined with the Faculty of Medicine. Chulalongkorn University established the Department of Autopsy and merged with the clinical laboratory department, which was previously under the Department of Laboratory. It also merged with the medical technology department acting as the autopsy dept of the Chulalongkorn Hospital.

The department operation revolves mostly around laboratory services for patients at The Chulalongkorn Hospital. For outpatients and inpatients and as well as the emergency laboratories that are open 24 hours a day without holidays. To help facilitate the doctor’s treatments and for the benefit of the patients too. 

The Academic Department of Postoperative Medicine is responsible for teaching clinical pathology to medical students and providing training for students from other institutions. Also for specialist doctors within the general pathology and clinical pathology divisions and medical personnel from within the country or abroad who are interested in studying or training in the laboratory.

2. Plan for the system committee and other divisions related to service.

• Laboratory analysis reports for sending tests to the OPD within 1 hour 30 minutes reaching 90% (POCT – OPD).
• Finding and preparing a system for solving high volume blood collection problems.
• Preparation for the implementation of the ISO 22870 standard, (POCT).
• Develop a specimen storage center to facilitate an efficient user service.
• CAP project preparation for requesting the CAP standard.

Services

The medical Department serves as the central laboratory of The Chulalongkorn Hospital under the supervision of the Thai Red Cross which operates under Thai law and is responsible for collecting specimens and test results for other departments, apart from laboratory tests from human specimens or human-related objects, such as blood, urine, and cerebrospinal fluid. The department also collects clinical chemistry and clinical microscopy (hematology and urine tests) from the public and patients at the Chulalongkorn Hospital and other medical institutions in order to obtain information that can be used in the diagnostic treatment, disease monitoring, disease control, disease prevention and health assessments including advice and consultation of various matters related to laboratory work with which the department is directly responsible to the doctor, patients/clients, and generally interested parties.

The autopsy department laboratory received it’s ISO 15189 certification on the 30^th April 2004 and is considered the first laboratory in Asia with this certification. It was renewed on the 2^nd April 2007, and complies with ISO 15190 as of 29^th April 2015 and was assessed for its latest renewal on 7^th February 2019.

The Medical Technology Council also accepts it as a training institute (CMTE) for medical technicians nationwide, a place where medical personnel can receive training, revision, academic meetings and academic seminars continuously every month.

There is a constant assessment of the internal and external parts of the organization for the highest efficiency in providing services to users at all levels and delivering the maximum benefits while reducing loss for the organization including establishing a specimen collection center in order to reduce the burden on the users at various laboratory services. Creating a one-stop service for all laboratory needs within the hospital and receiving the NGSP Level 1 certification for Hba1c analysis too.
