Department of Microbiology

King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital

Teaching and producing quality graduates to be leaders of society.
We are committed to creating the quality R&D Projects for new knowledge, applying and creating accurate, rapid and standard laboratory services as the national reference source.

The Department of Microbiology was established simultaneously when the Faculty of Medicine, Chulalongkorn University was founded (3 June 1947). Thus, Department of Microbiology has given more than 65 years of service. Initially, the Department of Microbiology was only a part of the Pathology Department, located at Saiyud Bunnag Building or Phakpaibul Building (Wooden Building), which later was replaced by the Preventive Medicine Building.

Then the Pathology Department was relocated to the new 3 – story Pathology Building. (the Pathology Building was removed and has now renovated to be the public field).

While the Department of Microbiology at that time was a unit located on Floor 1 of the Pathology Building. It firstly provided only the bacteria production service. Later, the coordinated R&D project with American Army physicians was added to expand the virus infection service as the virus infection was the first priority occupational health issue in Thailand at that time and microbiology works were increasing both in terms of academics and service. According to the Royal decree, the academic department was agreed could be added to the Medicine University.
