King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital is the leading hospital for organ transplantation in Thailand. Our achievement includes:

  • The first kidney transplantation in Thailand in 1972.

  • The first liver transplantation in Thailand in 1987.

  • The first cardiac transplantation in Thailand and South East Asia in 1987.

  • The major leader in defining diagnostic criteria of brain death in 1989, which was the beginning of organ donations from the patients with brain death, leading to the advanced development of organ transplantation in Thailand where the organ recipients have more chance to survive with a better quality of life.

  • The Donor Remembrance Day, which was initiated and held every year since 1992 so that the organ donors’ relatives, the organ recipients and the medical personnel can jointly make merits to the organ donors.

  • The first incompatible blood group kidney transplantation in Thailand in 2008.

Later, due to increasing numbers of patients, the King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital’s board of directors decidedto establish the Excellence Center for Organ Transplantation (ECOT), King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital, the Thai Red Cross society, in 2013, which is responsible for organ transplantation in particular. The continuous achievements are as follows:

  • 100 cases of successful cardiac transplantation in 2015.

  • The first successful liver and kidney transplantation in a patient with liver cancer and chronic renal failure in 2016.

  • The first successful incompatible blood group – living donor related liver transplantation in a child over one year old in Thailand in 2017.

  • The first successful living donor related liver transplant in a child with the lowest weight (5.8 kilograms) of King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital in 2018.

The academic conferences were initiated and are held annually such as the “lecture & hands-on workshop on organ retrieval” in 2018, with the objective to improve knowledge and skills of organ transplantation to be more effective, faster and for better survival outcome. The conference draws attention from a lot of medical personnel across Thailand.

  2. To be the education center for innovation, training, research, and academic services, recognized internationally.
  3. To improve efficient management system, promoting good governance and personnel development for a good quality of life.

The Excellence Center for Organ Transplantation (ECOT) consists of specialty clinics related to organ transplantation as follows:

  1. Liver, pancreas and abdominal organ transplantation clinic
  2. Pediatric liver transplantation clinic
  3. Kidney transplantation clinic
  4. Heart and lung transplantation clinic

Services

  1. Giving a holistic medical service and medical advice before and after organ transplantation by multidisciplinary experts including doctors, nurses, pharmacists, physical therapists, social workers, and medical service officers. Such cooperation is aimed for an efficient process of organ transplantation to an increased number of patients, with more effective management and R&D for the best outcome.

  2. Giving an exceptional service for solid organ transplantation (kidney, liver, heart and lung) by our expertised doctors, recognized internationally.

  3. Providing 24-hour care by organ transplantation-specialized nurses, who efficiently coordinate with patients and doctors for the best healthcare need. 

In addition, several activities and events were held by the Excellence Center for Organ Transplantation (ECOT) over the past year including:

1. The project of kidney transplantation to 100 patients in honor of His Majesty King Rama X.

The project aimed for successful living donor kidney transplantation to 100 patients with incompatible blood groups.

2. The 2nd “ORGAN CAN SHARE” at MBK shopping center in September 2019.

The activity included a seminar topic’ the miracle of giving’, led by the organ transplantation expert, Associate Professor Dr. Boonchoo Sirijindakul, Head of Excellence Center for Organ Transplantation, King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital, and other celebrities.

3. The academic workshop ‘Lecture & hands-on workshop organ retrieval’ on 15th October 2019.

The objectives were to enhance knowledge and skill of organ transplantation to be more effective and quicker. The conference draws attention from a lot of medical personnel across Thailand.

4. The donor remembrance day on 18th December 2019. 

The event was held for the organ donors’ relatives, the organ recipients and the medical personnel to jointly make merits to the organ donors.
