King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital

The rehabilitation medicine institute with morality and international standard. 

In 1970, Honorary Professor Sek Aksaranugraha launched the rehabilitation medicine service in King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital. Next year, rehabilitation medicine included in the medical student curriculum. At that time, rehabilitation medicine was a division in the Department of Orthopedics and Rehabilitation Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, Chulalongkorn University. Service was settled at Phahurat Building before moving to Chareon Somsri Building and Posayajinda Building in December, 1972.

In 1981, the Thai Red Cross Rehabilitation Medicine Center was constructed at Sawangkaniwas, Samutprakarn Province. In 1982, the center was inaugurated for rehabilitation service and provided health care for disabled. The center was affiliated with King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital. Professor Samak Pukkanasen was the first director. Residency training in rehabilitation medicine was established since 1984. 

On April 8th, 1997, the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine, the 21st department of the Faculty of Medicine, was founded. Associate Professor Krasae Sukonthaman was the first head of the department. Department of Rehabilitation Medicine, Faculty of Medicine; Division of Rehabilitation Medicine, King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital and The Thai Red Cross Rehabilitation Center was affiliated in service, academic work and research.

To create graduates and rehabilitation specialist who has quality and moral, produce valued research, service and academic activities and transform the society.


The Department of Rehabilitation Medicine is divided into 6 sub-units;

  3. Occupational Therapy Unit.
  4. Psychology Unit.
  5. Speech Therapy Unit.
  6. Advanced Geriatric Rehabilitation Unit.
