for national and international academic information.

In 1947, there was a royal decree announcing the establishment of the Faculty of Medicine, King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital, in affiliation with the University of Medicine. Department of Anatomy has been one of the first three departments of the faculty since the establishment, with Dr. Bunyen Tawipat as the first head of the department.

The key milestones of the Department of Anatomy from the beginning to the presence.

1947:  The Department of Anatomy was established with 3 main subjects for the academic courses: Gross Anatomy, Histology and Embryology, both theoretical and practical.

1948:  Topographic Anatomy and Neuroanatomy courses started. 

1954:  The first anatomy building was completely constructed for the purpose of anatomy classrooms, replacing the original building at the Red Cross Museum.

1967: According to the Royal decree, the Faculty of Medicine was transferred to Chulalongkorn University.

1970:  An additional anatomy building was constructed as a 4-storey building adjacent to the former anatomy building.

1997:  The department successfully developed a soft cadaver preservation technique, in which tissue is able to be maintained at room temperature for up to 2 weeks.

2008: The Department of Anatomy was relocated to the new 11-storey building (Its construction started in early 2006). Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn Siam Boromrajakumari officially opened the building on Friday, March 27, 2009 and bestowed the building’s name as “Phaetthayaphat Building”.

The Department of Anatomy contributes many accomplishments to the Faculty of Medicine, Chulalongkorn university faculties and to Thai society in terms of academic knowledge, a knowledge center related to surgery, and medical research for public understanding of anatomy.

1. To be the learning center for anatomy and genetic medicine for medical students, both internally and externally, at graduate and postgraduate degree level.
2. To create valuable research and knowledge, and to be recognized nationally and internationally.
3. To provide academic medical services, diagnostic examinations, and the prevention of genetic diseases.
4. To preserve Thai art and culture and to maintain the nation’s identity and wisdom.
5. To assess and continually improve the quality of the department.
6. To promote good quality of life for the community in the organization.
